Newbie to ettl with the 40D. Is it possible to use the 580 wireless with the 40D with the 580 being the only flash? I've spent a good deal of time in the manual and also searching online for any tutorials with no luck. I thought it was possible to shoot ettl off-camera without physical connection to the flash or without the use of a PW (or other variant), but can't seem to figure it out. Are there settings in the camera &/or 580 that need to be enabled? Thanks in advance!

go to the Strobist site, tons of information Strobist: Welcome to Strobist.
In short, however, I don't think the 580 series will fire remote and maintain ettl. I use the pw with mine and set it manually, all of which is explained at the link site and it isn't that difficult. Good luck.. |

You would need the ST-E2 transmitter mounted on your 40D to maintain eTTL to your 580EX2.
Other option is to pick up a special optical slave that can recognize a pre-flash (wein digital peanut for example) that would connect to the PC male jack located on the side. Or pickup something like the Radiopopper's - but requires another flash mounted to your 40D I believe. PB |

The ST-E2 works on ('IR') light, so the flash and the ST-E2 need to 'see' each other, otherwise the 580exII will not fire. Indoors the signals bounce from walls, outside you are limited to the 'line of view' of the ST-E2 unit. But when it functions, the 580exII retains full E-TTL (2) capability. ...€0.02... Kindest regards! Max@Home __________________
