Question Canon Speedlite Transmitter ST-E2

Does anyone know if this transmitter will work with the Canon 580ex? (BH photo only mentions the 550ex flash.) I want to get my flash off-camera, and onto a light stand when doing outdoor portraits, but I don't know how to trigger the flash. I considered pocket wizards, but I don't want to spend that much money.

Greetings all..

If you haven't yet heard the news, Alien Bees have just released their own version of Pocket Wizards.

Priced between the Pocket Wizards and the e-Bay "Poverty Wizards"

The battery receiver will be shipping in about 3 - 4 weeks, the transmitter and mains-powered receivers are now available.

An option to IR-type remotes .......

More info here.

Hope this helps,

Austen.

I have the cybersyncs haven't used them but I have them. I had bought the RFtx and recievers they really sucked, PCB policy of giving full credit towards the cybersync was great.
Haven't heard anything but good things of the cybersyncs.
One of these days when I get some time I will use them.

Yes, it does. If you have the 580exII you could use the Paul Buff Cybersyncs to do it much cheaper.

Is this confirmed ?

The reason for my asking is that some remotes will ONLY WORK ONCE on 580 EX II's.

I have some optical slaves, for these I need to re-boot my 580' after EVERY shot, I also have some e-Bay "Poverty Wizards", these work fine.

Some e-Bay sellers of various flash remotes SPECIFICALLY say that their products will not work with the later Canon flashes ...................

Sounds like your CFn's are set incorrectly.

Yes, but it depends on how you intend to use them. The ST is not for "all" shooting situations. Outdoors, the ST is unreliable. You should highly consider an alternate trigger like the PW's.

Are you speaking of a certain type of trigger? The few I have used have no problem.

Let me be very specific, they will work on a 580EX II (you are interchanging 580EX II with 580EX, they are very different flashes). Hook the receiver to the PC terminal on the flash...don't use optical slave adapters. If the Cypersyncs don't work the way you want them to PaulCBuff will send you your money back (within 60 days). And if you bought his 'chinese' wireless stuff, you can send that back in for a full credit on the Cybersyncs, no matter how long you've had them.

Sorry for the confusion, I have the 580 EX II, that will not work with some remotes, I omitted the "II" as it was very late here last night when I was talking !!

Good to see you've been able to confirm these new units work on the 580 EX II's though, I might have to save my pennies !!!!

It is a known problem with the Canon EX flash units (with the exception of the 580EX II) that they don't behave nicely with the optical slaves, and it has to do not with the custom functions, but with the electronics of the flash not dropping the residual trigger voltage all the way down to zero which is needed for the SCR in the optical trigger to release the circuit and allow a reset.

A Special Sync Cable with embedded electronics will allow a standard optical slave to work correctly with the Canon EX flash units.
