I am posting this seperately.

If you use Alien Bee lights, and haven't tried the fold up softboxes, you are missing a treat.

I just purchased a standard, 36" x 48" softbox from another company, set it up, checked it out and disassembled it. A lot of you already know that they are a bear to take down for storage, or travel, so they stay setup and in the way, if you don't have a studio. The next time I set up this softbox, it will probably stay up, covered in a large plastic bag, until next use.

The AB foldable boxes come in a bag, like your umbrellas, only fatter. Setup only involves removing the box from the bag, spread it open, attach the center ring to the center post, attach inner and outer diffusion. DONE!

Disassembly. Remove diffusion, loosen screw on center post, fold up and put in bag. DONE!

+1

Have the large octo and the large SB (wish i would have got the giant SB as foldable) and they are effortless with exception to the grid for the large SB which takes a little finesse

Thanks for separating this out.

I did email the AB folks to ask if you could swap out speedrings on the foldable softboxes. Here is their reply:

>The foldable softbox speedrings are permanently attached. The standard softbox does have a removable speedring that can be used with some of the Photoflex boxes.

Harry, can you tell from your foldable softbox if there is a speedring insert that is removeable/replaceable? Not the entire ring. I do understand that this is permanent. But I have a couple of foldable softboxes from SP Systems that do allow me to change the inserts to use with various brands of strobe heads.

Thanks!

Here is an example of the part I am asking about that attaches to the speedring:

The insert in the stripbox I have measures about 5" across. The insert for another speedring I have measures about 5 5/8" across. While it wouldn't seat down into the recess on the stripbox ring, the difference would easily be notched where the 4 screws are and maybe changing the washers. Wouldn't require resizing the whole outer diameter, unless you want it to set into the recess, which is also easily done with a grinder. Another speed ring I have, with the AB insert, is also 5 5/8".

Make sense of this?

OH CRAP!

Been accused of not knowing anything for my whole life then they want to come take me away and stick lit matches between my toes and bury me up to my neck in an ant hill with honey poured all over me in the middle of a pack of camels with diarrhea and bad breath all the time parading scantily clad virgin s (girls) in front of me so I can't possibly be pulled out of the hole. . .Fawking Dimmit!

I think so. Here is a set of photos that show the softbox with built in speedring and the speedring insert. Is this how yours works?

Thanks!

Not now John, I'm stressed. NSA is knocking.

Yes, that's how it works. Except all of mine have four screws or knobs instead of your 3. Shouldn't make any difference though.
