Congrats on the quick sale, and enjoy the SB-800. There is a thread I started a long time ago comparing flash modifiers that may be interesting to you, once you get the new flash: Flash Modifiers - Again!. It doesn't show you "how to take a good pic with a modifier' but what each modifier does to the light.

What kind of flash?

is that for using low f/stops to get low dof?
No, it's just another way to control your flash output. If you find TTL consistently getting tricked in certain situations, you can give AA/A a try before going to Manual.

Unlike some designs, the camera also swivels in the direction I prefer, placing my hand above the camera rather than beneath it, in portrait orientation.

As this is my first post I cannot post a URL but search on eBay for....

Flash Bracket Stroboframe Camera Flip

It's the one for £26.99 plus £11.99 P&P from go4dc.
Wow! It turned up today. That's not bad going for an order placed on Thursday from Hong Kong. I don't know whether it is a genuine Stroboframe or a knock off. The only packaging was bubble wrap and there were no instructions, not that any are needed. But it seems to function OK. I had to tighten the bolts to stiffen up he mechanism and I have heard that people have stripped threads doing this, or found them already to have been stripped during manufacture. No such problem with mine. Here are some photos of it....

There is just enough room to use it with a grip as well but I'm not sure whether that will leave room to mount the off camera sync cord. I'm still waiting for that to arrive. In any case, all that a grip will do is add weight and as the mounting bracket makes the portrait controls impractical to use a grip would really add no value so best left off.

EDIT : My off camera cord arrived today and there is no possibility to fit it with the grip as well and still retain the option to rotate the camera.
