Lighting for product photography

Tried some lighting I read from Strobist for product photography and it was quite fun, even though I managed to break 40x30cm glass while setting this "studio" up







So what was done here? I had two softboxes on very left and right of the subject, about 10cm away from the product. The power on these 150Ws suckers were down to minimum. Put a glass on top of colored paper in front of a backdrop. Set my camera to 1/60 @ f11 and fired away.

Challenges? Keeping the dirt and finger prints off the glass and paper below the glass. Also setting up small products without touching the glass is pain of the butt.

All in all I quite enjoyed the product photography and think I started a sparkle here. Definately much more easy than doing portrait photography as these objects are quite static and you don't really have to worry about other than lighting control and composition.

I agree it is a PITA when you get dust and fingerprints, etc...all over the place. Almost makes me want to use latex gloves when doing these. The macro lens would always magnify everything! LOL

I would suggest white cotton gloves or silk inner gloves. Either one.

I use cotton gloves that I use a lint roller on to make sure they don't create lint too. I also have used a can of compressed air to blow off the subject before firing. Although the air can get expensive usually a good strong breath will work too (as long as you don't spit all over it, which I have done)

Indeed! Not latex gloves!
