I went back to Canon Technical Services trying to clarify the operation of the Auto Zoom as described in page 21 of the Canon 580 EX II of the manual as I said. I included their varied responses in a Canon 580 EX II Review I just posted in the Equipment Review section. I suggest to read the review and any additional comments be made here.

We're using the Reviews forum for discussions like this now? Count me out. I've got enough to watch as it is.

I don't see anything in the reviews section that relates to this.

The original issue of this thread was that the Canon 580EX II does not work as stated in page 21 of the manual. I said that I was going to ask Canon as to their interpretation. From their answers I perceived that they avoided the issue. They stated that the sensor size indicator does not show when a full frame camera is used. When I challanged their statement; they changed their position to state that the sensor may light or not when used with a full sensor camera. As I explained in the reviews is that Speedlite appears to work as described when and EF lenses are used with a camera such as the EOS 1Ds Mk II and with EF-S lenses with a camera such as the 40D. However, when I use EF lens with with a 40D camera, the Speedlite zoom head does not work as described in the manual.
