They did not have umbrellas or softboxes at that time. Big fresnel spotlights . See here for a George Hurrel setup ...

You might get some ideas looking here: Frank De Blase Photography. He is an old friend, and is very friendly.

I too am very interested in the 40s style of photography, like Hurrell and the others. Have started to experiment with hard lighting.

those are really good - by hard lighting, are you using "hot lights" or strobes? also, are you using grids to keep it directional, or bare bulb?

I use strobes witout diffusors. No grids, just my cheap china strobes =) I made som new ones that are more in the 40s Hollywood style this week.

These are a really nice blend of old and new. They have the detail and quality of new, but that hard lighting really is a throwback. Very cool.

Pelle.. awesome. That second picture of Angelica is just to die for!

I totally agree with jfranco, the quality feels modern, the lighting and sense is old movie feel. Very well executed concept.

Very nice.
The idea is to use hard light but prefarable larger than normal.
I love to use Fresnels for this.

And Fresnels are basically what they used back then so you would get a very similar light.

Now if i could just afford a fresnel lens.. and justify the expense... Renting is an option ofcourse

Make-up, lighting, posing, background, and editing are great, Paul. But the straggly hairdo is very UN-forties. It is very 21st century, in fact.
Close, but no cigar.
