These seem entirely too expensive from B&H and other well-known retailers. Does anyone have any tips on good boom stands that don't cost an arm and a leg. They must, of course, be strong enough to handle the weight of a monolight plus soft box.
Thanks. __________________

Yipes. I was just looking at those. Which models specifically? They have three or four booms listed.

Heavy duty stands from Alien Bee work great. I have 4 stands and have never had a problem. I have wheels for my stands so I can roll them around my studio with ease.

The stand I use is here - http://www.alienbees.com/ls3900.html If you are actually looking for a boom arm then I would go with what Frank suggested as the Bee Arm is nice but not as stable as others. But the stand to hold the arm is great. |

The AB super-duty stand is pretty nice. I have one, but I prefer the feel and overall build quality of the Calumet brand booms and boom stands. Their booms are great; the clamp is all metal, and the boom has built in cord management, which is great to deal with dangling cables from monolights or pack+heads. I've never put my Profoto monolights on it, but the boom+stand setup handle Acute heads and AB monolights reasonably well.

lordarka, which model specifically of the calumet? I called them today and ended up talking to a guy who didn't know their line very well. Must support, I'd say, 11 pounds, monolight plus 3-foot or 5-foot soft box.
