Default Mini boom and alien bees

I have an avenger mini boom and when I mount an alien bee strobe to it with a soft box, the alien bee always slips and twists. It ends up pointing down no matter how tight I turn the mounting screw. Is the softbox too heavy or the alien bee not fitting in the pin correctly? Would a beauty dish work better and not cause the strobe to twist down? Thanks.

What is slipping? The tubes in the boom, or the flash on the pin of the boom? I have a cheap-o boom stand and ended up stripping the clamp screw that holds the pin at the end for the same reason. I was able to redrill/tap/and insert a bushing to repair the thread - and the new thread is stronger as a result. I found that by being careful about how I angle the strobe I can reduce the tendency for it to slip - but my boom can also hold the pin sideways which helps a lot.

Hey Zemlin,
Its the strobe (alien bee) on the pin at the end of the boom. I tighten down the screw on the alien been mount to the pin and it still slips. There are even marks in the metal pin on the boom when it slips and turns downward. Maybe I need to find a better angle?

I believe I found what I was looking for, and I'm not the only one having issues with mounting an AB to this boom. The AB doesn't really mount fully to the pin of the boom, so there is a drop-down pin available which allows it to fully grip the pin and hang upside down, reducing the strain on the light with a modifier.

Yes, use a drop down pin to mount. You will wonder how you ever tried to do it any other way. It's not an AB thing, most any strobe will pivot when mounted like that.

Any chance you can post a photo of the before and after solutions to make it clearer?
