For some reason, there is almost nothing that looks as nice to my eyes as a sunset shot, however, one has a lot more time if you use things like ND filters or high speed sync. A sunset event lasts what, 10-15 minutes? Using the above 2 tricks can easily extend that time to a couple hours (though obviously without the optimal sun placement... lol), which makes an awesome lead up and practice, if you will, to that perfect moment when that sun hits *just* where you want it... and you never know, you could get some fantastic shots while playing!

Thanks for all the great replies and info! I'm pretty sure I can control the time of day we do the beach shots , so it sounds like we will wait until later in the afternoon. I do have a 5 in one reflector set, but not the studio lighting that some mentioned, only my speedlight. I currently only have my kit lens of 18-55mm, but I am also thinking about renting a 70-200mm f2.8 lens. Any recommendations on focal lengths for model shots on the beach? Thanks guys.

If you were shooting during daylight some kind of diffuser over your subject will eliminate the harsh light. I use them for weddings as well you can shoot when the sun is at it's worst point for photography. All mine is, is a collapsible plastic frame with translucent material stretched over it size is approx 6ft x 3ft. You will need a second pair of hands but the results are worth it.

Hey Stevarnol, thanks for the reply. I actually do have a diffuser, I recently purchased a Westcott 40" 5in1 reflector set. I probably will end up using the reflectors or diffuser the most. Thanks again.
