Default Background Light used by Lifetouch for automatically changing colors

When my son's pictures are taken by Lifetouch, they offer different color backgrounds. I always wondered how they did it and thought that they must use a motorized backdrop device with different color backdrops. Well as luck would have it I saw a Lifetouch photographer trying to take some action shots and struck up a conversation with him as I was also taking action shots. I asked him how they did it. He said they have a background light behind the backdrop and use different color gels! He said they have a device with a roll of different gel colors and they push a button to change the colors. It would then change the color automatically. I asked him what it was called and tried to find it on the internet with no luck. Anyone know what this device is called and who makes it? I have another idea on how to use something like this and would like to play around with one.

Thanks

It would not surprise me if they had the special unit built for them.

Sounds like a Gel Scroller that is usually used in theater lighting (I think) something like this (2) Wybron 4520 4" Coloram II 2 Color Changer Scroller Stage with gel strings #4 | eBay but I to would guess they have it custom made (and possibly patented.?)

Thanks for the info. It sounds like a great idea on their part. I was thinking about something where I could superimpose a school or team logo / special pattern on the back of a backdrop.

Do a search for "chromazones dean collins" Dean was colorblind so he developed a system so clients could point to a swatch of color they wanted the background to be and he could recreate it exactly. He also had some videos on how to make a DIY projector for putting logos or patterns on the background and predicting the color as well.

Found the video online.

Cool Thanks! I will give it a look. I'm partially color blind as well and from what I've read, 50% of males have some form of color blindedness. My tests showed that I was red-yellow deficiant. I can see red and yellow, but when it got to different hues, I couldn't see much but a bunch of dots! I took a test lately and now greens are starting to be a problem. 8-(

Color is a little easier than school name or logo. Once you start messing around with that stuff you have to make sure the angle that it is be projected is perfect or things will start to look funky. I don't usually say this but it may be something that would be easier done in post.

In a former life i worked for one of the larger studios in FL that shot mostly high schools. We had a specially built motorized device so that you could pop up a green or blue gel on the normal gray background. Cost $1 extra! Ha! But hey, every extra dollar added up.

Hello Mike,

That is what they are doing here, but they are now charging $2! I guess it's inflation. 8-)

Maybe one of these would pack enough punch to project logos or what not. DJs use them, I've been in a casino that projects their logo on the floor and walls with something similar.

Product - Exterior 1200 Image Projector™
