I think that when you dismiss studio lighting, you dismiss lighting in general. Studio lighting is not just for strobes in the indoor studio. Lighting is lighting, whether it is strobe, or continuous, or sunlight... lighting is the use of such light to achieve the desired result. A combination of different types of light successfully is a mark of a true lighting artist. Don't make a general dismissal of a type of lighting a general attitude toward lighting. Learn more before making a statement like that.

![]() He is dismissing STUDIO lighting because *maybe* they: A: Want to shoot outside a studio B: Does not have the income, interest or desire to use STUDIO equipment To dismiss studio lighting is not dismissing the entire world of using a light source other than the sun to light a subject and capturing it with a camera, it just means exactly what it says... not shooting in a studio using "studio style" equipment. I am sure that once the OP gets a little more experience they will be able to voice their questions a little more precisely. Give the person a break, they only have like 9 posts here. ![]() |

Sounds to me like a basic lighting course (preferrably hands-on) would be in order.

Jerry- I just tried to make some peace on the "funeral Photography thread. Why bring arguments or personal criticisms up here again. You can state you case without getting into old bygones.
Dave's point is that knowledge of studio lighting is a good basis for the usage of outdoor lighting, available light and many other fields of photographic lighting. Many people are operating under the misconception that studio work is "old school" or boring because the don't realize what really goes into it and what comes out of it. In any case, let's not regenerate old arguments. If you disagree with Dave's or anyone's opinion, simply state your argument and leave it up to the OP to decide who's approach he or she agrees with. Dave- I know that you are long time pro and you know you lighting and techniques. Please take it easy on those who are new and perhaps don't know any better. Just tell them your professional point of view as to what's hot and what's not! My own attitude (and you don't have to conform to it) is that I give out the information and people will take it for what it is worth. If the are too careless or lazy to apply professional techniques and just want to have fun shooting all over the place- well that is their prerogative and their own business. Please folks!
