Can being the keyword ... it means a four day weekend, sometimes even longer, it means the great outdoors is virtually empty, and if you take scenic byways it doesn't have to mean horrid traffic. It's late enough that there's snow, so if you're near the desert, the combination of fresh white powder on red rock or sand is magical.
I went to The Columbia River Gorge for the holiday. The downside is that it's late there's snow ... so a lot of forest service roads are closed. I had planned to take dirt roads back from Oregon to Seattle, but alas, I have to wait for April or May. Still, here's some of what I got: Moonrise Over the River Columbia ![]() Waterfall Closeup ![]() The Bridge of the Gods ![]() US Route 97 ![]() Desert River ![]() __________________

Yeah, I definitely need to put up bigger versions. I still need to finish going through the photos from the trip; I've got some waterfalls ... actually a few hundred of them, in raw mode, waiting for attention. I put together a photo blog, and got a great template, except that it doesn't leave much room. 560 px is the widest I can get away with. Then I've got a gallery site a few of these need to go on, with an ugly design, where I can get away with a little bigger ... this is an older photo, and from a bit further north in the Cascades, but:
