Default ""Worrking A Shot ""

Hi All...

Well, this is a couple of shots , that I'm not really sure prove anything, but thought some of you might relate to what I call, " Working A Shot.."
These were taken at an area here in the Kingdom, where some remains of old mills are located.. I posted a few of these in the Architectural Section a while back, titled;
" BRICK KINGDOM " if ya care to see more of the area...

Anyway in passing by this morn, I thought I would try one more of a waterfall... I know , I know , another waterfall... but I promise , no more from me for awhile...lol

Ok, not saying these are good , bad , but maybe in different,,, here is again , what I call working a composition or shot, rather then walking away... I'm sure many of you can relate to what I always call UNWANTEDs in a photo... sometimes people will think you could move right or left to omit an unwanted, as you will see here , not always possible... sure everyone has been here , done this ... part of the Working For The Shot Theory lol.."

Well this one is full of them, so lets see if I salvaged anything here..

Shot #1.... Just a quick shot, showing what I was up against
Now this first one is just a snap... so save the critique for the next two...

old grain store Left jetting out into the area../ Road and Bldg. top center/ guard rail/ On Right, Part of one of the old Mills/ Foreground, Iron Walkway bridge../ Downed trees and blowing trees... you see the picture lol...

Shot #2... Tripod in a weird unstable position, shooting thru the metal rails of bridge, wanted nothing but the fall here.. without Unwanteds..
  • Focal length: 37.7mm (35mm equivalent: 150mm)
  • Exposure time: 0.067 s (1/15)
  • Aperture: f/6.9
  • ISO equiv.: 50
  • Whitebalance: Manual
  • Metering Mode: spot
  • Exposure: Manual

Shot #3.... Ok this for me the final project , wanted this shot to show some of the old mill, and minus waterwheel, or power source... wanted this to go with my shots on the BRICK KINGDOM.. So here we go , my choice to keep for that series.. in this case the brick wall was not an unwanted ..
  • Focal length: 31.9mm (35mm equivalent: 130mm)
  • Exposure time: 0.067 s (1/15)
  • Aperture: f/6.7
  • ISO equiv.: 50
  • Whitebalance: Manual
  • Metering Mode: spot
  • Exposure: Manual

Really nice post Tom This a great illustration of what we all do to try and squeeze out a comp from a pile of rubbish (#1). There is certainly something there, but what can you do??

#2 is a huge improvement over #1 and has all the nice elements of a solid composition! Great color and techs all around.

#3 is just at another level of good. More like great!! Awesome composition and complements of colors and patterns I love everything about this shot Tom. I would proudly hang tis on my living room wall

Thanks for sharing!

Jay

Very nice example of lemons and lemonade!! Illustrates how to "see" what is there and then capture it. Very well done. You are becoming more the teacher - we get to see you "working" and then get to see the results of "working a shot"- LOL. Ken and I are just a couple of "grasshoppers" hangin around.........................

NEM, Great job at making the unwanteds disappear. I like the colors and textures and the overall decaying look that the building has. Nice job at capturing this one; alot harder than you make it look!

Bravo,,,that's it, that post is what it is all about.

We all want to improve our photography and you have taken the time to help us and lead by example. I find this post very helpful and I think you are most generous to take the time to explain what is going on and how the results pan out. An example we can all try and gain something from.

I personally think that this is how the Camel forum can work best and urge everyone to think about how we can share a slice of what we do well to help everyone else.

I'm off to hit the Karma button for a guy who really deserves it for his contribution!!

Big thanks from me

And that, folks, is how it's done. A perfect example of how shots can be made by the photographer.

Back in the days when I used to prowl the mountains of my native North Carolina in search for a shot, I messed up more pictures than I care to admit because I included too much. I found that my shots began to improve when I would examine the scene and ask myself what it was about the scene was I drawn to. So when I would take my shots, I would try to make my composition around the element that my eye went to and crop out the things that were extraneous.

You have demonstrated this technique quite well with this series of shots. Once again great job.

Great job given the setting. I'm struck by how much the color of the bricks adds to the 3rd shot. If you scroll back and forth between the 2nd and 3rd you can see how much warmer the 3rd is. Nice job.
