Measuring a distance of 1,942 feet, it is the longest overwater pier in Southern California. The movies "Top Gun" and "Bring it On" were filmed nearby.

I don't like this shot. The bottom half is very underexposed, and the details are difficult to resolve. Further, your perspective here does not emphasize to me the length of this pier, which I think is an essential distinguishing perspective. Perhaps you could shoot closer to the pier, and out to toward the sea, to incorporate more of the perspective? Also, I think a longer exposure is definitely in order.

I appreciate all comments so thank you for your input you guys have given so far.
Arka - In my original set up for this shot I did want to include the whole pier to give a complete perspective. As such, I did set up from a nearby street at a higher elevation(Mission Street if you are familiar with Oceanside) but the shot seem too 'boring" without clouds in the sky. I decided to get a little closer to focus on one part of the pier for a different perspective. I did intentionally underexposed the shot to give a from dark to light expressive meaning to it. Finally, you are right about the longer exposer, but I unfortunately put the tripod back in the car when I got closer to the pier and shot this hand held with a Canon IS lens. |

I like the exposure in this one. I can see all the water and the silhouettes of the pier and people are very nice. The colors are very nice as well. I agree that it doesn't give a feeling for the length of the pier but a good shot in and of its own.
