Default Columbia River Gorge & Crown Point Panorama

This was taken Saturday evening with the group of us that went there to catch the full moon rise in the East as the sun was setting in the West. Unfortunately the moon was too far south and by the time it got up over the hills it was about an hour after sunset. But I took other pictures while I was waiting. This is a 11 image panorama taken with my 1DMKII and 70-200 2.8L lens. I warmed up the colors just a bit and added a bit of saturation and sharpened.

Here is a link to the medium size version of this that is 2000 pixels wide and 334K in size.

And if you are really interested and have high speed, here is a large version that is 5000 pixels wide (just under 50% of the original) and 1.8 meg file size.

For those that don't know the Columbia River, this is just west of Cascade locks and if the river was at normal levels you would not be seeing all that sand on this side. The river is really low from the dry winter we had and the dams only letting water through to produce electricity. Hopefully this winter will make up for it and we'll get a good snow pack in the Cascades, Blues and Rockies or it's going to be worse next summer.

I also enjoy chasing after full moon pictures , when I see the moon has been up for a few hours when the sun has just gone down I consult my Casio Forrester watch which has a tide table on it which I have callibrated for moonrise rather than high tide , then I start planning my shot and hope the clouds don't interfere with it ...

I downloaded the big image, and the clarity is incredible - I also couldn't see the join .

Nice work.

Thanks DV and Paul. Paul, I found that if I can get the exposure and color balance the same across all images that it usually makes for a very seamless stitching. Panorama Factory does a great job in this aspect. Although I take a lot of handheld panoramas, I did use my tripod on this one. I have a leveling column on my tripod so I can level the tripod first and then I level my ball head so I get a even swing from left to right. I then find a place that gives me a good average exposure and lock exposure. Then I shoot my shots from left to right, making sure I have a good over lap between images. I'll do this several time to make sure I have a good series.

Thanks guys.

Mike

Mike,

This is beautiful! I checked out the big version, and I can see cows on the Washington side! Really nice and clear and an inspiring view. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks Bavanor, Elaine and Michele. Elaine, the large version is only half the size of the full size. In the full size, one of the cows was sticking his tounge out at me when I took the picture.
