Twains are so twicky, but it's red! So I like it, Mark!

Things/people in motion is what I am trying my best to understand these days. So, excuse the questions. Are you shooting the moving twain in shutter priority? Why a -.3 EV with a higher ISO? I've been shooting moving objects handheld in IS1 but I was reading yesterday to pan fast moving cars in IS2 for a better effect. Going to try and find something fast today! But it's Polish Festival in my neighborhood today. There will be nothing fast! Only colorful!

Hello again, Renata!
Actually, those above were shot in Aperure Priority only because I had not thought the settings through in advance, hence what you see in the first was entirely by chance and not the effect I was aiming for. The following day I returned to the bridge

to shoot in Shutter Priority as you rightly suggest and I've posted the results below, which is more the effect I wanted. Unfortunately the overcast sky does not help the picture.

E-PL3 SWD 12-60mm, Shutter Priority, 1/13 sec, f/13, ISO 800

You ask why a -0.3 EV and the answer is that my cameras are all set that way
by default to hold any highlights from burnout, especially sky tones.

It is always easier to fill shadows in PP than to recover faint highlight details.

And I take your point that panning in IS2 may sometimes be a better way of creating the effect of speed.

In my second attempt below, the aim was to have the front of the train sharp and the carriages blurred, but such an in-camera effect probably isn't possible.
But could of course be created by merging two images - i.e. one sharp train front overlayed on a blurred one, leaving the carriages behind it blurred (if that makes sense!)
Well, I hope that answers your questions, but have to admit that I am really only experimenting with this myself.

I hope your Polish Festival shoot went well, I will check your profile to see if I can find some pictures of it -
that is a subject in which I have had more experience. Cheers for now and thanks for dropping by.

PS: SORRY ABOUT THE FORMATTING, RENATA - UNFORTUNATELY THE POWERS THAT BE HAVE MADE THIS FORUM AMONG THE WORST FOR PERSONAL PREFERENCES WITH REGARD TO PRESENTATION,THAT WAS NOT ALWAYS SO.
SO I'M LEAVING IT JUST AS IS WITHOUT WASTING MORE TIME.

Ooooooh, the 2nd one is great!! I also have a burnout issue with sky shots. It's been especially problematic this past 5 months because the sun is always out and bright, we have had only a few cloudy days. I remedied the problem by getting a ND filter. Cokin P Series, with adjustable rings so I can put it on the 12-60 and the 50-200 as well. I know some like the Tiffen but it's easier for me to use the Cokin. The EV comp would probably be another solution but I've been shooting in manual program and can't set the EV there. But thank you for sharing your endeavors, it helps me.

Turned out to be too bloody dang humid today to stay out too long. We had one day of respite and today it was back to being soupy. I spent my early days as a desert rat and that is how my internal thermostat has remained.

It was all for the best anyway, I got one or two Polski parade shots & then headed back home before I could be tempted to go off my diet and head over to the tents to get myself a big plate of pierogis. I am very fond of the kapusta.

Next weekend it's a balloon festival and those don't move fast either...

Hello again, Renata - 2300 hours, it's late, I'm waiting for a loaf of bread to finish baking at midnight before I turn in.

I have to say I am not a fan of ND grads as they have a very unpleasant and unatural effect upon sky tones. In fact I don't use any kind of filters at all. IMO it is far better to correctly expose for the sky and simply adjust the land tones and shadows in PS, or whatever editing program you use.

I will now PM you some info that may interest you.
