Thanks all for your comments. Fran - I like your crop and it would look good in a frame. I guess I used the negative space to let the picture 'breathe' so to speak. But I think in this instance a tighter crop would work.

Just to offer the opposing viewpoint (FRAN ) ~ I absolutely LOVE negative space done well. It's a lead in, or an environmental peek, or just something that allows "breathing room" like you said. In this case, I think the space was best used in crop #1 and I liked that crop a lot. And Fran is a wonderful curmudgeon so he has valid points too.

As far as the b/w conversion, it looks just as great as I thought it would. Nice work!

Well at least call it "positive space" from now on then Sis.
"Negative", has...well.... a negative conotation.
Either way a good photo is a good photo.
When there is something in the space that adds to the story (like Sis's famous walls or meadows) then that's a good use, but a dark black or plain white, that's more what I am talking about.
