Hello, I'm new here, and new to photography. I've already posted a question on Camel's FB page - it basically asks how I can get a photo to look like the one I've pasted here (bleached out background, stronger foreground). Is it done with some kond of software?

Welcome . I don't know if special effects were applied to the photo. Since the photographer was shooting into the Sun, it's possible that the camera underexposed the foreground. Later post processing may have been used to increase the brightness of the entire photo so that the foreground became lighter but not overexposed. This in turn overexposed the background.
Or the photographer exposed for the foreground which overexposed the background

Thanks so much for your response, Bob - I'm new to fourms as well as photography so it's a novelty to get a reply! I've recently picked up a camera for the first time since I was a kid, so I'm an auto-focus kind of girl at the moment.

Is it possible to re-create this kind of image through photoshop or pixlr? I've tried it the easy way by lightening the whole image and then re-colouring the foreground with the brush, but of course using the brush is always going to make the whole thing look amateur. There must be a more professional method of 'trickery' available!

Thanks, Charlotte

Charlotte, my post processing skills are limited and I use GIMP for photo editing which is not as comprehensive as Photoshop. One option is to isolate the background from the foreground via masks but it's difficult to avoid the creation of a distinct transition line. Perhaps Photoshop has a plug-in that creates a subtle transition line.

Now if you want to trick your camera into underexposing the dark objects in the foreground of a photo while using the 'auto' setting make sure that a majority of the photo has a bright background. The camera will try to evaluate the 'brightness' based on the entire photo. The average will then be too dark for the foreground. Then just brighten the entire image via post processing. Feel free to ask questions.
