Default Hi from Sweden

Hi all. I´m fairly new to digital photography but have been a keen amateur photographer with 35mm, MF and some LF since 1964. Over the years I have been using Kodachrome 64 for my slideshows and Ektachrome for 6x6 MF prints. I now own an Nikon D300 APC size, unfortunately I could not afford a "full format" digital.
I still wish to run slideshows for my friends but I´m having great difficulty getting the right sort of slideshow S/W to be used in larger flatscreen TVs or video projectors. To get decent quality I have to use HDMI directly from the camera.
Are there any good solutions to get better than VGA quality when running a slideshow from a DVD?
