Myself, I dont do weddings.. expectations are unrealistic often times, and if you dont satisfy in the eyes of the customer, they will hate you till the end of time. Also competing with other "photographers", trying to not get in the way of people's view, having to use the restoom but cant, dont get a chance to even eat. Hours of B.S. for not much money. Which brings us to... often you have to low ball the shoot because "Uncle Vinny" can do it for free with his P&S camera.

Uncle Vinnie is the Messiah.

He should shoot both stills and video together.

A "Bridal Industry" record might seem romantic
when initially delivered, but 3 or 4 Uncle Vinnies
could produce a record that will bring laughter
and tears 10 and 20 years later [assuming the
marriage is still together].

The commercial record is "perfect" but is bogus.
The very imperfect scrapbook by the Uncles will
outshine a commercial record over time cuz it's
the real deal, the inside story.

There are risks, and shortcomings, involved with
the amateur approach. You NEED 3 or 4 Uncles,
and a real commitment from them ... frinstintz,
their record should be the wedding present from
each of them, for real.

"Uncle Vinny" will be there anyway, and he'll torment you the whole event by pointing out he has a newer camera, with more megapixels, better lenses, and enough flash power to light the shadow side of the moon. Even still, he'll figure out your PocketWizard channel number an pirate your lighting.

He will debate with you, long into the night, about the virtues of shooting JPG vs. RAW, the use of UV filters, and the best memory card manufacturer. His memory card probably costs more than you got paid for the wedding.

He'll shoot over your shoulder to get the poses you set up, and have everything posted to Facebook before you can load your gear back in the car.

Been there, done that, got the T-shirt, use it to cushion my gear.

I try not to be "Uncle Vinny" at these things, but the fact is that a second shooter can be a valuable asset if the primary photographer doesn't already have one. Besides, the second shooter has most of the photographic fun without the responsibilities.

Yup! I love second shooting weddings. Hell, I love first shooting weddings, but I'm a lousy marketer, and as I got older, my tolerance level for B.S. from clients and their families took all the fun out of it.

That's a big reason I never went in seriously as a professional photographer, especially for weddings and formal portraits, where the vanity level is especially high.
