Default Photoshop CS on E-bay

Without boring you with the reasons (major computer meltdown) I am in the market for copy of Photoshop priced around £500. However I see it for sale on E-bay for £15! The sellers seem to have a high satisfaction rating but I've never bought via E-bay.

Has anyone any experience or comments about what I would get?

Why don't you just go to the Adobe website, and download your own copy for free? Burn it to a 50 cent CD. That is even cheaper. Of course it will die in 15 or 30 days, but hey, think that eBay one will run longer? Buy it and find out. Pad the crooks pockets and let us know.

People wonder why stuff costs a lot. Maybe because their are scum bags around that pirate the stuff to make a buck. They probably write spam & viruses in their spare time.

Default BEWARE!!!!

I know somebody who was in the same circumstance and bought Photoshop on eBay. He was assured that the software was new in the box and the seller had good feedback. He got a gold CD with 'Photoshop' and a license number hand written on it with a black sharpie. The license was already registered to someone else and Adobe refused to help him with an installation problem. He was just screwed.

If you have an older licensed version, you can upgrade for a lot less than the full package cost.

Thanks for all your input guys- enough to put me off the e-bay route! But I do wonder with Photoshop at circa £500 how so many people seem to have it.

Because it's really good?

[edit]
Just a bit more info. If you can get your hands on a new install of version 7 then the upgrade cost is not so high. I also see that if bought from the Adobe US site it costs around £370. Typical rip-off Britain I guess... :-\

I've not used Elements but it seems like that software should take you a long way. For me, with as much as I use Photoshop, it's easily worth the cost of a good lens. Once you have a license, upgrading isn't too expensive and you go a pretty good while between upgrades.

People do steal Photoshop, there's lots of ways to do it... but every one is a potential backdoor into your computer for people that make threatening software... cracked software is usually bait.

Think of it as a lens you really, really want except, you'll use on every shot you keep... it's easier to stomach that big outlay of cash that way.

...and definitely look for coupon, upgrade and package deals. If you shop patiently and carefully, you won't have to pay that full sticker price. Paul's right about PS7... if you can find an unregistered version of PS7, you can upgrade to PSCS2 for under $200US.

Good luck Chris.

Despite the high initial cost of ownership, this program has seen more use on my computer than ANY other piece of software (other than the OS) that I have EVER bought. It is, without a doubt, the best available (and I have tried most of them). If you still just can't stomach the cost, then consider Elements 4.0 or PaintShopPro -- both very good programs with plenty of support available online and a fraction of the cost of Photoshop.

OHenry and Blinky are correct. One of the best programs around. I don't need to use it on every keeper, but I do. If you got PS Elements with your camera (Canon), you can upgrade to the big boy for $300 using the link I provided in an earlier post in this thread. Not a bad deal fo rthe best stuff around.
