is the pic of people or a thing. with people the hardest parts to move are hair. instead of actually cutting away the pizels, may i sugest using a mask instead. that way once you drop in your new Background you can then refine the edges by painting in Blk/Wht. use your fav selection tool to rough out the image then hit the Q' key to enter quick mask mode. the image will turn red, then paint in blk (it will look red) or white to fine tune things.

A fabulous resource for extraction is Katrin Eismann's illustrated method, Photoshop Masking & Compositing. Extractions can be handled using a variety of tools and methods and she covers them all, from simple basic extractions to the complex. This is not a quick read however, but will definately show you how to select the best tools/methods for your task at hand. Russle Brown has created some video tutorials which deal with extraction, and Photoshop CS3 has a very good extraction tool. There are tutorials available for that too.
Take your time to learn the benefits of masking and applying multiple tools for selection/extraction and start with something easy to learn the basics.
...wishing you good luck.

thanks everyone for the help. I have been able to remove the subject from a background now but the next question is: How do I save that subject and drop it into another photo?

Open the source image and the destination image, and simply drag and drop with the move tool. You will want that on its own layer so you can resize and move it around on the background.
