When working up photos for web posting, say for the galleries here, do you size the image before or after doing other adjustments, besides sharpening? Or does it matter?

Yes, I think you should size them down typically for better web display. In the forums, the horizontal size is limited to 800 pixels, I believe.

Steve, I do all editing on as large a file as I have. Resize is almost the last step.

Thanks JD, I know they have to be resized, but what I was wondering is does it matter, quality wise, weather I resize before or after doing adjustments such as levels, curves, contrast, etc. I don't have much experience posting to the web and I want to have the best quality I can while keeping to size limits.

Thanks Lee! You posted while I was typing. (not one of my better skills)
That is how I have been doing it for my personal stuff, email and such. I just wanted to make sure it was the best way. Thank you, Steve |

Steve, someone a hell of a lot more competent than I will come along and explain this in better detail (where are you John) but my assumption is just that the more info you have the smoother the transitions in your image will stay as you edit. For the same reason, if you shoot jpeg, convert to 16bpc before editing.

I usually save 3 different versions of my images! I save a final in TIFF or PSD for printing and upsize using Genuine Fractals. I save a version in a cropped 4:3 ratio to use as wallpapaer at at least 1600 pixels wide. I save a small version, 800 pixels wide. for posting, and use Genuine Fractals to downsize, and NiK Pro Sharpener to sharpen for display. "Final" sharpening is always the last step for me, but I do selective sharpening as required during the PP. When I sharpen for printing using NiK the images don't "look right" for display, and vice-versa. |

S_Egbert: Yes, make all your adjustments and basic editing and save that file as your master image file - 16 bit tiffs or psd works well. Then resize, sharpen a bit if needed, and convert to 8 bit sRGB jpeg. __________________
