HELP! Help!
I've got a little problem (could be bigger, depending on how to fix it) that I'm hoping somebody can help me with... I currently use PhotoShop Elements 4.0 as my image editing software... a couple of weeks ago, I took a BUNCH of pictures at a daycare where a friend of mine works. Now some of the parents actually want to buy some of the pictures that I took (I've posted several on here...) last week I went in and sharpened some of the images and reduced the noise in them and sent them off to be printed. After I edited them, I saved them as .jpg files... NOW, I've got another parent that would like some of the pictures, and when I went in to sharpen and reduce noise a bit on these pictures PSE is no longer allowing me to save the images as .jpg files!! It's making me save them under "JPEG 2000" which adds the .jpf at the end of the file name. And it takes much longer to save the file... and then once it's saved that way, I cannot look at it on my computer (unless I open up PSE again) It doesn't show the picture as a thumbnail in my pictures folder either... it just shows a box with JPX across the top of it... I don't know why it's suddenly changed the "saving" options... I haven't upgraded my program, didn't mess with it's settings, NOTHING. what can I do to get ".jpg" back?? If it's any incentive, I'll give Karma to anyone who can help!! __________________

Did you convert them to 16-bit by any chance? PSE and others will not let you save to JPG if certain things are not JPG compliant. 16-bit is one of them...
Image - Mode - Convert to 8-bit By the way. Do NOT save "valuable" images that you may wish to re-work and/or sell as JPG. Every time you open and save over it, it will re-compress and in JPG terms that means "lose data". |

now that you mention it, I did change something on my computer... but now (I'm searching!) I can't figure out where it was that I changed it!! I remember thinking "hmmm... that doesn't look any different" when I did it too. Now if I could just recall where I made the change!

I figured out where it was!!! Thanks so much Mr. P!! You are awesome!
It was right in PSE that I made the change... I figured it out and switched it back to 8-bit.. didn't realise that making the change for one picture would affect the whole program! YIKES! thank you thank you thank you! |

You may want to EDIT your images in 16-bit to preserve as much "stuff" as possible. When you are done, a last step could be to convert to 8-bit and save ANOTHER version...?
Some do everything in 8-bit. Some edit and save in 16-bit, always. If they need a file printed, or posted they convert to 8-bit, resize, whatever and save just that re-do as 8-bit. Saving as 8-bit and as 16-bit could be thought of as similar to saving a PSD and a JPG. Twice as much files and that may not be what some want. __________________
