I know I'm not asking this correctly, but I'm trying to get a certain look. I want the subject's face (a baby) to fill most of a circular shaped frame, but I don't want to cut off his arms - I want those to dangle outside of the main circle frame, within a larger square frame. I'm confident I can figure it out, but I thought maybe someone could share some techniques that would help simply the process for me??!

I have the steps written up for Photoshop 7.01, Elaine. When I get home tonight I'll find it and post it for you (unless someone beats me too it before then). It's not all that difficult but it is about 12 steps or so.

Not sure if this is of any help to you.
Started out with this. ![]() Duplicated the original layer. Selected the area I wanted to keep and deleted the rest. ![]() Created a new layer between these two and filled it with white. Went back to the original layer and selected the flower and copied it. Pasted it into a new layer at the top. ![]() I then selected top layer and Merged Down to combine the cropped image and the flower. ![]() I added a drop shadow to the cropped layer to finish with this. ![]() |

Yes, that's what I'm after! Thank you very much for showing me your steps. What you did with that flower pic really makes it jump out at you. Thanks again!

One quick question for everyone....
How are ya'll cutting out your subject so well? I've tried the wand and even the cutting tool but mine don't look nearly as good as yours. Can anyone give me any tips to doing this better? Thanks, Josh |

OHenry is right. And I think from past memory, you have Photoshop.
Many different ways, and NONE of them should be used all the time. You can use the Magic Wand, or the Extract Filter, or pick with the Color Picker, and more and more. For a LOT of knowledge on this whole subject, the book linked below is the best one to get, and will show you more than you'll want to know unless you really want to get into it: http://search.barnesandnoble.com/boo...35712794&itm=1 |

Ohh, in case someone wants a more in depth method for doing this in Photoshop, you could see the link below. It isn't the best method, and may not be a better tutorial than the one already here, but it is another view, and may answer some questions

Excellent book recommendation, MrPickles. This book is the bible on selections, despite its onerous title.

I've always used the instructions that came out with about the first issue of Photoshop Users Magazine.

Awesome pic MJ!
I'm using Photoshop 7.0 right now I'll ride to B&N today and pick that book up if I have time. Here's my first attempt at it. I had a hard time picking out the darker parts of the leaf where the magic wand would select part of the background also. There were a couple of small spots that were not picked up but I was lucky that the fill for the drop shaddow filled them and matched the original (pretty close) for me. It's a start and I'll keep working on it as well as trying the new techniques that were mentioned above....once I figure out what ya'll are talking about. Thanks and let me know what you think of it, Josh ![]() |

I tried another one with the procedure listed on http://www.pbase.com/image/28182867/original that mr. Pickles listed. This was the first time I used a mask in Photoshop.
I know the pic isn't that good to start with but it was a good one to try this out with. Here's how it turned out Josh ![]() |

Fish,
Doesn't have to be a good picture to start with. You made it different and learned new tricks. Now, when you see another pictrue that might work, you'll know what to do, and sometimes this "weird" stuff can make a so-so, a better image. That's what its about. |

They look pretty good, Josh. That's a good adaption of the technique with the leaf.
