I have used it off and on for years. For me, it is much more stable and about twice as fast as the PaintShopPro XI thing I foolishly bought last year---have dumped that and gone back to GIMP. I use the old RSE for RAW usually, but sometimes use UFRaw which works in GIMP.
GIMP can't use 16 bits images as I recall, the unsharp filter is not the best, and the interface can be a bit clumsy. But you can do a lot with it and can't beat the price. |

I've been using the Gimp for quite a while now. It's got it's limitations (8 bit color instead of 16, no adjustment layers (but both of those are in the works)) but for most things it works great.
There are a number of tutorials out there for it, but most of the things I've found are more geared to creating cool text effects and such, and not photo manipulation. There is a pretty new video podcast called Meet the Gimp that judging from the first half dozen episodes looks like it's going to be all about working on photos. |
