Default The Woes of Photography-Lightroom

Oh boy, I downloaded the new Lightroom update, which is a nice improvement. But, [I had no idea] all my keywords do not work. Somehow it lost my data base and even though the keywords are there, and if I hover the mouse over a keyword a photograph appears, Lightroom will not retrieve them.
Does anyone know if this is correctable, or am I going to have to go back and re cataloge everything?

If you installed the update over the previous version, all should be good. Or at least is was for me. Haven't heard others complaining.

In 1.0, there was a database file, but in 1.1 it is now a catalog file, because you can have multiple catalogs. They should be (by default) be in your MyPics folder, under Lightroom.

No problems here either.

Did you allow it to 'convert' yout existing database to the new catalogue file format when asked? (I'm sure it asked me...)

OK, here is what I've got. I am in the correct catalog as I can pull up the folders and open them. The photos open fine.
However, I have lost the keyword connection to those photos. I am not able to open any photos by using a keyword.
Kevin, I had no message to convert files, it just changed 1.0 to 1.1.
My big fear is that I will need to delete all of the keywords and begin again.
Perhaps you have some ideas.
Best wishes.

Are you using Find in the Left Panel inside the Library Module?

If so, If the drop downs set to Anywhere and Contains All?

If you open one image, in the right panel, does the Keywording section show keywords set for the open image?

I may be wrong about being asked to 'convert' but I'm sure it said something like that (or maybe it was the backup...maybe I'm getting old... )

I assume you have the keywords you had previously assigned in the LH panel?
If you select an image in 'Library' mode, does it have any key words associated with it in the 'Keywording' panel on the RH side?

You can always go back to version 1.0 by uninstalling and re-installing the v1.0 file (I assume you still have this?) and opening up your old (saved) database file, this should put you back where you left it before 'updating' to 1.1

You could then try the upgrade again...

Mr. P, find works great for the Folders, but does not do anything for the key words.
If I hover the mouse pointer over a keyword, the 1st photo in that group shows up in the navigator, however I am unable to open that group of photos.
Kevin, yes, the keywords are all there. Yes I have ver.1. So you believe if I delete the entire program, and reinstall, Lightroom will find the old keywords and set itself up?

I can't see why you can't re-install the old version, you will have to 'swap' the Lightroom Database file it creates with your own one that was backed-up by the 1.1 install (you may have to re-enter your product code details).

I've not done this myself but you may have to try it if all else fails.

It seems as though all the info is there, but just not all tying up together?

Have you gone onto the Adobe forums to see if this is a know issue?

Kevin, I don't think there was any backup for the 1.1 install. That may be the problem.
I wonder if yor or Mr.P would know where that backup file would be found to confirm?

Mine definately made a back-up and It's its in the 'Lightroom/Backups' folder in my Pictures.
I assume the new version is using the new 'Lightroom Catalog.lrcat' file and not the old 'Lightroom Database.lrdb' file?

I've just copied this from the 'readme' file from the 1.1 update:

Photoshop Lightroom 1.0 Users

Lightroom 1.1 includes many new features and enhancements not available in Lightroom 1.0. Please read the following information to learn more about migrating your previous Lightroom 1.0 libraries to Lightroom 1.1.
Libraries to Catalog migration
In Lightroom 1.0, the documentation refers to the database (or .lrdb file) that stores information about your images as a library. Based on feedback from the community and the way in which these files were stored and shared, the terminology has been updated to refer to these entities as catalogs (or .lrcat file).
Upgrading the Lightroom 1.0 Library to Lightroom 1.1 Catalog
Lightroom 1.0 libraries can be updated to the new catalog format by installing Lightroom 1.1 and opening the library file. If you have a single library, Lightroom 1.1 will automatically open that file upon launch and indicate that Lightroom needs to update the format of your original file.
Additional Notes:
  • Please specify a backup location for your database prior to continuing the upgrade process
  • The duration and responsiveness of Lightroom during the catalog upgrade process is based on the size of your existing catalog and your current hardware configuration. This operation cannot be cancelled. Please do not force quit or use the task manager to quit Lightroom during this procedure.
  • You may choose a different catalog to upgrade at this time by using the Choose Catalog option
  • Catalogs upgraded to Lightroom 1.1 format cannot be opened by Lightroom 1.0
  • During this process Lightroom will check the 'integrity' of your Lightroom catalog. This is to ensure that the information in the catalog is properly stored within the file.
Looks like you can open your old database and LR 1.1 will convert it. I assume your installation ahas already done this?

Default Re: The Woes of Photography-Lightroom

Version 1.0 uses the "lrdb" file, typically located in "My Pictures\Lightroom"

Version 1.1 uses the "lrcat" file, typically located in "My Pictures\Lightroom"

Backups are in a separate folder like Kevin stated...

By default, the version 1.1 install put the program in a DIFFERENT directory than v1.0. Look in "ProgramFiles\Adobe\" and see if there is a "Adobe Photoshop Lightroom" and one that is "Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 1.1".

If so, you can still run the old one, but new changes you made in 1.1 will not be shown because of the database vs catalog change.

Before you go uninstalling and reinstalling, I am not clear as to what your issue is. You said this:

If I hover the mouse pointer over a keyword, the 1st photo in that group shows up in the navigator...

What does that really mean? Where did you hover? In the right panel? left one? Where?

I would assume you are hovering over the keywords in the Left Panel, under the heading "Keyword Tags". In there, you will see a LOT of keywords, and a lot of them may be grayed out. If they are grayed out, then you have a value in the Find field (in the Find section of the left panel).

If this is the case, then it is showing the keyword tags in the folder you are in. The numbers beside the keyword, like 10/20, is stating that there are 20 images in your catalog with the keyword, but only 10 of them are in this folder. If you click it, it should show just the 10. If you click one that says 0/20 then it will say there are none.

The install automatically deletes the old install unfortunately

Mr. P, yes, I am hovering the mouse over the keywords on the left side of the screen. This shows the 1st photo in the group in the Navigator.
The keyword haave a value at the right [indicating # of photos in that group] ie: flowers 281. If it click on flowers I get no response, but, at the bottom of the page, left hand side, it shows, flowers 0 or 281.
Kevin, I thought that might be the case.

The v1.1 install did NOT delete my 1.0 install, or my 1.0 version. Both of them still run fine. It IS in a separate folder, and it WAS by default.

When I click a keyword that has a number, it shows images. When I look in the lower left it says something like:

Keyword Tags/Paris/50 photos/1 selected/123456.dng

with 1 selected bold

On mine it removed the old version, and according to the readme it does:

"Note: Lightroom 1.1 will automatically remove the Lightroom 1.0 executable and replace the folder “Adobe Photoshop Lightroom” with “Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 1.1"

Mr. P, Kevin; The ver. 1.1 install appears to have deleted my 1.0. It did not ask for a backup or location.
[Keyword Tags/Paris/50 photos/1 selected/123456.dng] does appear, with none showing as slected.
Something of interest, I have about 50 keywords, and sub keywords, and 3 keywords I have found do work and show a group. None of the subgroups under that keyword works. Of the 3 keywords that work, all the photos withing that group have been upgraded to 5 stars by the update.
So I can find 4 or 500 photos in 3 keyword catagories of which they are all listed as 5 star photos. LOL, What a mess.
I can't think of anything else to do but delete all the keywords and start over of try Kevin's advice and delete both programs and begin again.
It appears that even if I can find the catalog, the files are corrupted and everything is a 5 star photo.
You guys have any thoughts?

Do this....

Go to your My Pictures directory.

Do you have two files in there like these?
Lightroom Catalog.lrcat
Lightroom Database.lrdb

If so, RENAME the "Lightroom Catalog.lrcat" one to something like "ABC_Lightroom Catalog.lrcat"

Now COPY "Lightroom Database.lrdb" to "Lightroom Catalog.lrcat"

Open LR v1.1 Make sure it says version 1.1 (on the splash screen) or in Help-About.

It will pop up a message that it needs to "convert" your database.

Do that and see if it is the same as you state it is now...

Mr. P, Kevin; great news. I went to the .Irdb file, double clicked on it and a message opened for me to convert my files. I clicked on it and everything worked. Thanks you so much for your help and patience.
I've one more problem; when I did the search for the ircat and irdb files, I found over a hundred Lightroomlink and Lightromshare PNG files. They appear to just be repeated over and over on the same day. They appear unnecessary and I would like to delete them, any idea what they are?
