How do you put your name on photographs?

I see images with the photographer's name and date in the lower portion. How you do that? Thanks for any info. This may not be the correct forum for this question, so I apologize in advance.

Any image editing program that allows you to type text on an image should work.

And such a program will also allow you to actually write what you want if you purchase a tablet/pen set...

Thanks for the help! I'm figuring it out in Photoshop Elements 2.0.

In Elements 2.0:
Ctrl-Shift-N
OK
Choose the Text Tool
Pick a font, style, and size
Choose a color
Click in the image where you want to type
Type your name
Enter
Flatten
Save

If you want a copyright symbol, use Alt-0169, and type the year and your name:
© 2007 John Doe

It also helps if you drag the Layers pallet to the workspace so you can see which layer you're working on.
