For those interested in a lower cost RAW conversion program, perhaps ToneUp Studio has what you want?
ToneUp S3 is a professional application written by a photography enthusiast to give everyone a cheap and powerful Raw Image Processing tool $14.99 (approximately £8.50) ToneUp is a feature-full product, allowing users to load and post-process images (including most DSLR Raw images), output them as Jpg, Tiff (8 or 16bit) or Png directly to other packages and upload 'Custom Curves' to the camera (Nikon only). Seems heavy on the Nikon side, and for Nikon's it uses the same conversion algorithm as Nikon Capture. For others, it uses DCRaw. If your particular camera isn't supported, the Author claims to give you a copy of the program in exchange for a RAW file from your camera. Not a bad deal. I didn't try this one, because I already have enough RAW convertors. But if price is the deciding factor you can also take a look at dpMagic.
They have three versions

In my quick playing, it seemed like ToneUp was easier and produced better images. Hard to say as your mileage may vary and it could be different for other cameras.
If you are looking for a good low-cost option, both of these should be downloaded and compared. |

Hi Mr Pickles.
If you are using ToneUp with Nikon RAW files the image quality should be as good as Nikon Capture (since its using the same algorithm). With other camera RAW files its using DCRaw , which IMO produces very competitive results... certainly better than Canon's Digital Photo Professional software and very comparable with Capture One, from my brief experience with it. I am adding features to ToneUp constantly and am very open to feature requests ... Hope that helps. Todd -- ToneUp S3 Author www.ToneUpStudio.com |
