In the making of:
I had to retouch a part of the photo, because the photograph was taken through a fence, and some unfocused wire showed up (see the image below). Is there an elegant way to clean this kind of 'noise'? I've tried using FFT transforms but because the strip is too large it didn't work well. __________________

Mr. Pickles,
Indeed I used for the final retouch action the clone tool. But doing this I realized it must be a much more common problem, so I tried searching the internet for more automatic methods. |

I doubt that you're going to find an automatic method to do such a removal. This isn't "noise". This is an actual object that you want to remove. It's something that would have to be done on a manual basis.

For this kind job, I duplicate the layer, select a chunk that matches, and put the selection in a new layer. Using the move tool, I hide the object I want to get rid of with the chunk. Then I merge the background copy with the moved chunk and use clone, heal, patch tools to conceal the seams. The seams on you cut and paste patch are much easier to hide using the tools than the actual object you're trying to remove.
