Default Deleting the background for a new one

Can anyone tell me the best way to deselect the background from my subject to make it a different color?

I work with CS2, and cant get it to deselect without grabbing some of my subjects edges.
Help!

Hey, I tried going in to do what you said, but got lost in the instructions. I am new to photoshop, so Im wondering if you have a step by step in more detail? I dont know where to begin to pull my subject out.

I usually get the best results in masking with my wacom tablet and zoom in at 200-400%. Very accurate but a lot work ...

Add a bit spice to your background with rendering clouds.

If the quality is not sharp enough, is that my fault, the lens fault or the camera fault? What needs to be fixed....still a beginner

I think you just need to take a bit more time using the brush very carefully. You can also change the hardness of the brush edge in the brush options area. As recommended above you want a hard edge. I think you were using a soft edged brush.

Also if you make a mistake you can switch to white and undo your mistake.

I think you did a good job for your first effort.

Expect something like this to take at least 20-30 minutes to do a decent job. A great job would take even longer.

Another way to do it is by using the extract filter. It works better with contrasting colors though. BW makes it tuff because everything is a shade of gray.

Best,
Jay
