Default Saving history with PhotoShop edits

Is it possible to save the editing history when you save a PhotoShop file? I'd like to be able to open an edited file and scroll back through the changes that were made to the image. It appears all history is lost, however. Is there some trick to use to get PhotoShop to save the history?

Ken, go to Edit>Preferences>General. At the bottom of the window see the section called History. The log is off by default. You have the option to record it and save it to a separate log file or to save it in the MetaData section of the file.
Cheers, Murray

Note that while you can review the changes to an image in text (log) format, the history states are not saved along with the file. In other words, you can't reopen an image, scroll through the History palette and revert to a previous edit as you could during the original editing session. History states exist only in RAM (or Scratch) and once the file is closed they're gone forever.

The only way to do this would be for each edit (you will have decide your definition of an edit you want saved individually) to be done on its own layer. The layers then become your history.

This is exactly what my post of a few days ago was about. Using the technique Tim Gray teaches lets you non-destructively edit your file and save all your layers without producing a file that is much larger than the original. The history isn't saved but you can go back and change or delete any layer at a later date.
