I use the i1 Display Pro and am very satisfied with it. I have a Viewsonic 24" ips panel. Tried it on my laptop just for grins, sllight improvement but nowhere near accurate due to the laptop panel technology (TN).

A quick and dirty trick is to use your gray card as a reference when you do the adjustment manually.

Do the calibration in the light you'll be under when you are working. When you get to the RGB sliders put your card under the screen to compare and match up the grays and you are pretty close.

I'll add my vote for the ColorMunki Photo. Calibrates your monitor AND provides printer profiles. I was amazed at the improvement in my prints.

The Spyder4 and Colormonki devices are completely hardware & software based. No visual color decisions are required.

With the Spyder4Pro or Spyder4Elite the only thing you should do manually is to set the brightness, contrast, and individual RGB levels using the graphical interface. A graph is displayed with a bar showing where the brightness, contrast, R, G, or B value currently is and a target range. You adjust the control manually then take another reading. When you get all of the values within the target ranges the software takes over.

I don't have a Colormonki so I can't tell you whether or not it will guide you through manually setting the monitor before the software takes over. It has, however, gotten good reviews and is the sensible way to go if you want to calibrate both your monitor and printer.
