is there an advantage to using a standard gray card vs a color checker card for white balance?

While all "standard gray" cards have (or should have) the same reflectance, not all are color balanced (meaning have equal reflectance for R, G & B). Cards designed for white balance are specifically designed to be color balanced.

I saw Jason Hermann use one of these in one of his instructional Vids, and I was impressed with how easy it was.

Yep, I added one of those to my adorama wishlist... $40 is still a bit high, but probably better than a gray card enough to buy one.

I have found these to be not quite accurate. They also wear out and get dirty which changes them even faster. My personal favorite is the Whi-Bal. Can't break, can be clean or sanded ever if dirty, and very very accurate. Each one is tested to confirm accuracy before shipping.

While the Photovision target is pretty good for exposure, it can't see into 3-D objects, like a reflected meter can, so it can miss some things. I prefer something that works all the time and is faster to use, like a meter.

Yep they are on sale at quite a discount. I wonder why?

I have another brand of these collapsible targets and the fabric it tearing on the metal rim inside. Won't be long before it is unusable.
