anyway to "fake" HDR in photoshop CS without any plugins? or is that not going to happen?

I got so frustrated with CS that I reverted back to 7, then went to CS2 when it came out.

I have CS3 and it does have the HDR feature.....but it does not seem to work nearly as well as Photomatix which I just tried.....see my thread:
