Smile HDR Processing Challenge #69 - St. Mary's Lighthouse by woollyback

Rob (aka. woolyback) has donated images of St. Mary's Lighthouse for this challenge.

The lighthouse is on an Island just north of Whitley Bay on the coast of North East
England and is accessible on foot at low tide. The lighthouse and adjacent keepers'
cottages were built in 1898 , using 645 blocks of stone and 750,000 bricks. It was
built on the site of a monastery where a small sanctuary light would have acted as
a guide to passing ships. The lighthouse was decommissioned in 1984 and is 38m (120 ft) heigh.

Thanks for the images, Rob.

This is to remind Camels that sometimes it's fun to think outside the box.

Processed with SNS-HDR Home followed by Topaz Adjust Blue Sky filter and a bit of fiddling with Photoshop.

Being that I'm currently playing with a new copy of SNS-HRR Home I decided to give this one a try. I love the photo and subject matter as well.

I processed the files in ACR to eliminate clipping on each image, applied lens correction and straightened the horizon before saving to TIFF. The files were processed in SNS-HDR Home. I decided to warm it up a bit while I was there. I then did some final adjustments and cropping in CS5.

I was going to scrap it and start over, but I have to get my backdrop support mounted in my studio. I might give it another try later.

Regards,

Al

Merged in Photomatix and post-processed in Lightroom 4. Dipped into Photoshop to remove (Healing Brush) the flock of whatever-they-were in the upper middle of the image. After adjusting for lens distortion (as much as I could), the bird on the left side wasn't completely in the frame, so I had to get rid of the rest of him. Try as I did, I couldn't get Photoshop nor Lightroom to correct all of the lens distortion. It might be time for me to download ShiftN.

Great source images Rob, thank you.

Photomatix for me. Used layer masks in PS to bring in some details from the original exposures. Applied a Topaz filter. Made a curves adjustment. Straightened using the crop tool and cropped for the 1/3rds with the horizon / tower / top of light house bang on the 1/3. Lastly removed a lot of magenta CA from the rocks on the bottom right of frame. This was good fun to play with. I really liked the sun catching the light house.

A really good job, Al.

I really like the warm colours you have introduced into the foreground.

That looks weird, Steve. How did you get a curved horizon?

Actually, this is one image that makes ShiftN go crazy. I think it is a combination
of a tapered lighthouse and the angle of the causeway.

This is superb, Sebastian.

The colours are vibrant and natural, the horizon is horizontal and the lighthouse is vertical.

Hurrah!

Thanks for all the detail of your workflaow, Kevin. I like the letterbox format
but compared with others, the definition is soft. IMHO, a really sharp image
suits this subject.
