Jumping on the Iris bandwagon.

Tony I like your composition and backgrounds of both images. Everything looks great except the irises. In the 1st one, there are areas of gray, noted in my markup. They are not pure gray but definitely lack saturation. If you run your eyedropper around the image you will see areas where the RGB colors are very close to each other (approaching neutral).
On the 2nd image, the entire iris is very gray. If you set one of your eyedropper samplers in the info palette to LAB color you will see that the A channel is dead - between 0 and 3 everywhere in the image.
I am guessing the iris may have been quite bright and the tonal inversion caused by your HDR s/w pulled the highlights down toward mid gray. It may be personal taste but I might expect the iris to be bright and colorful and the background to be less spectacular.
But it seems most of the others prefer the way it looks and that's all that counts.
