Default Dr. John - one-shot pseudo HDR

This was run thru Photomatix and then tons of work in Photoshop. C&C welcome.

Too much.

The background looks as if it was replaced in Photoshop, the bleeding of the Jacket onto the background is strange and the edges to the fake background have fringes. The replacement of the background should be considered a failure, if you intended it to even look remotely natural.

The oversharpened and gritty effect on the musician is an artistic decision and therefore ok. However the fringes on the skull look ugly. The other edges are mostly ok except perhaps for the elbow on the right side, but that one isn't too bad.

Pushing the black of the the amplifier and the boxes on the right to medium brown and highlighting the noise was probably a bad idea. Those boxes were black to start with, so they can stay dark. The HDR-treatment works against you in this area.

To sum it up, your image illustrates well why Photoshop-work isn't easy. It's the details that make or break composites. Sorry for not having more positive things to say about it, but don't let this discourage you.

I'm not discouraged. That's what C&C is for. The background is just a plain, blue sky (it was an outdoor concert). I've been thinking of replacing it, but haven't had the time yet and not sure what I'd replace it with. I do like the glow around the Dr. and will be keeping that. I've found that I always have to run photos thru Photomatix several times with different settings, as making one part of an image look good inevitably makes another part look bad. I then copy/paste the various parts into a single image. In this case, I got Dr. John to look the way I wanted, but the sky turned into a flat grey mess and the stage equipment is filled with noise. I have another copy of the image with a more natural and less noisy look to it, run thru Photomatix with less extreme settings, but haven't had the time to edit the two into one image. The right side, where the equipment in the background meets the sky, looks wrong. I may also replace his face with a less extremely processed version and 'shop out the oof head in the foreground. Thanx for the comment.

Here it is with the background re-processed and the Dr. toned down a bit. Still don't know what I'm going to do with the sky.

I have stated over and over that I am not a fan of "over cooking" I like to keep it real but with a punch. Now having said that, at times I feel myself being pulled to the darkside, it does have its place and I think this photo is one of them.....I like!!!!

I'm also not a big fan of over-processed HDR. But his red suit was just begging for it, and it brought some light to his face.
