Let's review what we know so far:
American (but not born in America) Indy car driver who has enjoyed tremendous success in another form of motorsport. Had a small part in the 1971 documentary "On Any Sunday" with Steve McQueen, Malcolm Smith, and Mert Lawill. Most of his success has obviously been on two wheels, however, he holds one distinction in the Indy world to this day. Short version + hint: very succesful motorcycle racer; at least one outstanding achievement in Indy car racing; more specifically at the Indianapolis 500. Look at that '80's hair! __________________

If I recall this photo is circa 1986...ish. Hope it helps, didn't mean for this one to drag on this long. |

Some information to fill in the gaps of some of the hints:
Jeff Ward's part in On Any Sunday was very short; 5 seconds long in fact. Ward was a 10 year old boy riding a wheelie on a mini bike during Bruce Brown's introductory narration. Ward won 7 AMA championships and was part of 7 Motocross des Nations winning teams. After retiring from motocross Ward moved to Indy cars where he placed third in his first Indianapolis 500; the highest placing rookie ever. After retiring from Indy car racing Ward returned to two wheels winning his second AMA Supermoto championship in 2006 and his second X-Games Supermoto gold medal in 2008 (at 47 years old!). Who would have thought the little kid riding wheelies for Bruce Brown in 1971 would have such a long and succesful motorsports career and still be winning races nearly 40 years later? |
