Important message about copyright

We want to make clear that displaying an image can be a basis for infringement of copyrights.

This forum wants to maintain its friendly aspect also regarding the copyright of others.

It must be remembered that copyright has two main purposes, namely the protection of the author's right to obtain commercial benefit from valuable work, and more recently the protection of the author's general right to control how a work is used.

If posting an image violates any of these two purposes in any way or the copyright owner makes an objection, the image shall be removed by the moderators.

We would like to see the use of images falling in the category of fair use. Please read this Wikpedia article before putting up an image.

The most relevant section of the Copyright Act of 1976, 17 U.S.C. is:

Notwithstanding the provisions of sections § 106 and § 106A, the fair use of a copyrighted work, including such use by reproduction in copies or phonorecords or by any other means specified by that section, for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching (including multiple copies for classroom use), scholarship, or research, is not an infringement of copyright.



In determining whether the use made of a work in any particular case is a fair use the factors to be considered shall include:

• the purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is of a commercial nature or is for nonprofit educational purposes;
• the nature of the copyrighted work;
• the amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole; and
• the effect of the use upon the potential market for or value of the copyrighted work.

Please refrain from posting an image if there is any chance that it does adhere to these four factors.
