Default GTCU #1897

This is Retro Week for Guess the Close-up as I use my Vintage c. 2003 equipment for #1897, including my Coolpix 995, an old secondhand tripod, and no other special equipment except room lights from a floor lamp, the only new technology being the compact fluorescent lamp (CFL) tubes and the light-emitting diode (LED) bulb in the lamp, all 60 watt equivalent output. Of course, this particular bridge camera model can still frame tightly enough to give an APS-C format dSLR with a 1:1 closeup lens a run for its money. This image is resized and sharpened but otherwise pretty much straight out of the camera.

First glance "says" it's a sisal scratching post.

Could be sea grass, not sisal. Never looked this close to know the difference.

Neither scratching post nor place mat, nor is this made of any kind of grass. There are objects of this very general type that are made of grass, but this is definitely not one of them.

You are getting too hung up on the material. Although some of these things are made of grass, they would be in the minority and their texture would be very different from this one, which is made from an entirely different kind of fiber. Although this object might get wet in use, water would tend to interfere with this one's intended purpose.

But that's all there is to look at so far.

A sun bonnet.

Based on his use of the old bridge camera, and mixed types of
"light bulbs" in his floor lamp, plus the age of the tripod, I was
about to go for "Hat". But, would it be unethical to use such a
broad description after you've suggested the far more specific
"Sun Bonnet" ? So based on the 60 watts total of lighting, I am
ethically bound to ask the age-old musical question:

Is it bigger than a breadbox ?

Cuz if it gets wet it transmits heat to your skin ?

Or maybe it's just less comfortable to sit upon if
it gets really wet ?
