Default GTCU #1886

Sorry for the delay, but the process of taking all the images of the mystery object was more difficult and took longer than I expected. Here is first visual clue:

I5370rs.jpg

Almost every household has at least one or two of these somewhere about, and it typically goes by a different name on the east side of the Pond than the west. I think the Aussies and Kiwis use the same name for these that the British do, but i am not sure. Although this first image doesn''t seem revealing - Oh, all right, it isn't - many of these devices have this feature in some form.

No, the material isn't porous and isn't intended to let anything through. Partial disassembly of the item is required for routine maintenance and this pattern is intended to facilitate that operation on this particular device.

An electric can opener with bits of can labels stuck to it, or a fine tooth comb full of dandruff.

Neither. The little specks are too small to see with the naked eye, for the most part. Anyway, here's another visual clue:

I5372rs.jpg

This is an entirely different part of the device but is taken at about the same magnification.

Most of these devices do not have the feature shown in the above image, but it is not a drop-your-jaw rarity either.

I can't make heads or tails of #2. It could be the entrance to a black hole in space.
Do you have one that that has a little more clarity to it?

I don't know if this has more clarity, but it is an extreme crop from another photo. The direction of the lighting is a bit less misleading though.

Is #1 a rusty old bottle cap and #2/3 an old glass bottle of some sort?

Scoundrel says it needs maintenance, and image #1
is what facilitates doing that. I'd guess that is some
sorta screw-off cap, with grippy ridges, to facilitate
whatever maintenance is needed.

Oh, and every household has one or two [versions?]
of this thing. I wonder if most of us are aware of the
need for maintenance ? Typically ... NOT.

I think the third clue shows some kinda "sight glass"
that checks for the presence of whatever fluid goes
in thru the screw-off cap. I tend to discount the idea
that most house holds have one or two of them even
tho I have no clue what they are. I've been noticing
that such "information" is too often misleading and
not well founded in reality.
