Believe it or not I've heard of Gaff (Gaffers) tape but have never seen it
Anyway it is not Gaff tape and since you believe I gave a wrong response earlier I will say you got it correct as your close enough. I was looking for Duct Tape!!

IMHO, the colored threads would fall in the debris category and would not be considered part of the tape.
