A Bunny Story by Snoopy

Chapter 1

*****It was a dark and stormy night, the bunnies were scared. Lighting crashed all about causing a strobe light like effect casting weird shadows everywhere. The bunnies huddled in Snoopy's dog house, while Snoopy and Woodstock stood guard at the entrance.

*****Suddenly a flash of lighting revealed a creature creeping closer to the dog house! There was an other flash of lighting and the roll of thunder revealing the creature standing at the entrance holding an object in front of it!

The bunnies were shivering in their little house, but they knew they were safe, at least for awhile. Suddenly the sky lit up and a huge cloaked creature blocked out the sky.
The bunnies began to quake. The dogs howled and barked, snarling, showing their long pointy teeth.

Just a few feet away the cloaked and draped figure hunched, and bent towards the dogs, saying......

............"Supper time, Snoopy." It was that little bald headed boy who thought he owned Snoopy. The bunnies fainted with relief while Woodstock chirped "&%(&$*^$*&&". (Translation: Where's my supper?) Snoopy did his supper dance before beginning to eat. "Crazy dog!" muttered the bald headed boy.

*****The weather began to clear. The rain went away and the wind died. The clouds became less allowing the pale moonlight to shine. A sound in the distant sky filled Snoopy's ears. It was a sound he knew well. THE RED BARON!!! Next door the GREAT PUMPKIN beckoned Snoopy with a new battle plan.

*****While Snoopy went to see the GREAT PUMPKIN, Woodstock chirped commands to the bunny ground crew to ready Snoopy's Sopwith Camel for action.

Snoopy ran to the Great Pumpkin, barking loudly. It had been a year since his friend had appeared, only to leave right after October 31. Snoopy never kn ew why his friend left, but always welcomed his return with plenty of barking and jumping about.

After settling down, the Great Pumpkin told Snoopy, "I have new orders for you and you must pay close attention to what I say. this could mean life or death for you, me and the bunnies. Woodstock will be in grave danger also."

"listen up, Snoop...even as we speak the bunnies and their friends are readying your Sopwith for battle action. Get ready, don your gear and be ready to fly at the drop of a bunnie tail. "

Snoopy went about gathering up what he would need, including a granola bar and a power drink. He wasn't going to be caught with low sugar like the time before...that could wipe out a mission!

But first he had to visit the 'mademoiselle'. Together they drank hot cider to his health and victory over the RED BARON. She wept a dry tear as he left her standing alone in the deserted cafe.

He whistled "THE SAINTS GO MARCHING IN" softly to himself as he returned to his Sopwith Camel. The ground crew had pushed it onto the still wet field. The light from the aerodrome had been doused. His ground crew stood shivering in the cold. Woodstock greeted him with his aerogear.

Meanwhile the "mademoiselle" retreated into the cafe to a secret room which housed a shortwave transmitter. Sitting down she warmed up the transmitter and put the headphones on. Pulling out the clicker, she began to transmit in Morse code to the RED BARON. She was in fact "Mari Hatti" a German secret agent working behind enemy lines.

Snoopy climbed into the Sopwith, settling himself in the seat and making all the needed adjustments. He stowed his granola bar and power drink, adjusted his flying scarf and looked at the field in front of him.

The bunnies, Woodstock, and the Great Pumpkin were all there.
Emotion flooded Snoopy; he was loved! Soon he would face his great rival, The Red Baron, in battle.

His thoughts briefly turned to the mademoiselle and the time they had spent together. He had heard that males (even dog males) thought about sex every fifteen minutes and he was certainly no excdeption. Quickly she pushed thoughts of her aside. It was time to fly.

Snoopy pushed the start switch. "Contact" he yelled to Woodstock. "#)^#$)(%" replied Woodstock. With help from the bunnies the propeller was turned, the engine coughed sending black smoke from the exhaust pipes. The engine sputtered then caught, the propeller began to spin faster and faster.

Snoopy pulled the throttle back till the engine purred like a kitten. He signaled to the bunnies to pull the wheel chocks. His Sopwith Camel moved slowly at first, then began to pick up speed as Snoopy engaged the throttle to it's fullest. Faster down the leeway the camel went to finally it was airborne. At last Snoopy was in what he considered his element. It was only a matter of time now before he engaged the RED BARON.

Snoopy was flying high; he was in his element. His white scarf billowing behind him, the tiny gnats all over his goggles, and the blue sky all around him made him smile.

He checked the sky everywhere, looking for his arch emeny, the Red Baron. He knew he had to be very careful, for the Baron was an expert at spotting Snoopy and his Sopwith Camel.

Snoopy's legs began twitching and the muscles seemed to have a mind of their own. He glanced around but saw nothing, yet his instincts told him something was very wrong. Was he about to go down without seeing his rival?

A helpless feeling crept into Snoopy's brain. His legs jerked faster and he began to whine...he yipped softly.

Within moments those feelings pasted. Nerve twitches Snoopy thought. He looked around the sky trying to spot the Red Baron. Not seeing him, Snoopy checked his instrument panel, fired a short burst of his guns, and checked the manoeuvring of his Camel.

Still a nagging feeling persisted that something was not right. Snoopy whined softly to himself trying to figure out what was wrong. His thoughts went back to events that had happened a week prior.

Snoopy remembered the day well, in fact, too well.
He had been dozing in the sun on Tueday afternoon at 2:10 pm. The wood of the deck was warm, creeping into Snoop's muscles like a tender massage. He sighed and closed his eyes.

The scream came then, piercing his ears and crashing into his senses like a Mac truck careening down the hairpin curves in Shoshoni National Park while the driver stood on the brakes.
It was the bunnies! He knew that rabbits only made a noise when in extreme danger or near death! Snoppy was up and running before he realized he could be in harm's way, but the bunnies were his frineds and he must be there for them!

As he ran he saw the predator----a large cat from the new neighbor's next door. He screeched to a halt and growling,approached the cat slowly.

Snoopy advanced on the large cat - growling. Then stopped in puzzlement when the cat spoke to him.

"Hi there! My names Garfield. I'm new in the neighborhood. I was wondering if you could show me around. Oh, by the way, what's with the bunnies? They act like I was going to attack them or something!"

Snoopy was completely surprised. It was Garfield, one of his favorite cartoon characters. For a cat he was pretty cool.

Snoopy approached Garfield slowly and asked. "What are you doing here; you're in the wrong cartoon."

Garfield looked around, checking his surrounding carefully, especially the bunnies and finally reassured Snoopy that he was friendly and harmless.

"How did I get here?" Garfield asked Snoopy.

"I guess there was a mix up at the paper."

Snoopy and Garfield began to chat about their worlds and what they wanted for Christmas, when Snoopy noticed Garfield began to slowly fade. First his orange and black stripes began to lighten, then his body began to lose form.

"Hey, man, you're disappearing!" Snoopy exclaimed.

Garfield now was just a shadow and as he looked at Snoopy for the last time. He waved goodbye and softly wad heard to say "See ya...."


"I guess he found his way back to his cartoon strip. Too bad, I was beginning to like him."

Snoopy's thoughts returned to the Red Baron and the terrible twitching in his legs and the inappropriate whining and growling his had done earlier.

Suddenly without warning, Snoopy was rudely brought back to the present. The sound of a thousand angry hornets went zipping by. Snoopy blinked, for out of the sun came the Red Baron. The Red Baron passed close by Snoopy laughing hard. Snoopy could feel the heat of the Baron's guns and choked on the exhaust of his tri-fokker.

Snoopy realized the Baron was playing with him. He began to growl with frustration at his wayward thoughts. It was time to put The Great Pumpkin's plan into action.
