These are pictures of my Grandmother and Grandfather when they were younger. She was from an Old Aristocratic Family and he came from Italy by himself as a very young man. America is truly a Mixing Bowl. Their love story is one that could be a movie!!

My Aunt and Uncle stopped by on their way from Vancouver to Winnipeg - they had many old family photos and I managed to get a couple of scans.
This one is, from left to right, my Grandfather (Frank), Great Aunt (Hildegaard, Grandmother's sister), Grandmother (Helen) and Great Uncle (Ike, husband of Great Aunt). Aunt Hildegaard (92 I believe) is still with us but sadly the others are gone. Don't know the actual age of the shot but my grandparents were both born in 1908. |

This isn't old enough to be historic, but it may be of interest to some. It is an aerial photo of South Philly. Maybe someone can date it for me. I recognize Franklin field and the Navy yard, but not much else is the same as today. Veterans stadium has come and gone since this was taken. Today this photo would include Lincoln Financial Field, home of the Eagles, Citizens Bank Park, home of the NL East Champion Phillies, The Wachovia Center and the Spectrum. Oh and don't forget I-95. I'm thinking late 50s or early 60s, maybe earlier.

If there is interest in this old thread, I'll offer a couple from the mid 1800's.
This little dog is resting next to a stack of banknotes. I have no idea why the photo was taken but fantacize that the dog foiled a robbery and was shot with recovered loot. Any better ideas? ![]() This baby was alive but moved her eyes during the exposure. Mom was holding on securely to prevent other motion. Judging from the freckles, I suspect mom had red hair which photographed black in the blue sensitive emulsion of the late 1850's. ![]() pencil note inside case: "Miss Ellen K. Wightman Emily P. Wightman Gone but not forgotten Many daughters have done virtuously but thou exceedest them all. She done good and not evil all the days of her life." Overexposure and damage to the surface mars this daguerreotype (early 1850's) ![]() and finally: Is the expression due to the clothes or did Mom say she'd beat him if he moved? ![]() |

The attached photo is of my great great great great grand mother, Frances Pace(1785-1845). Her father was in the revolutionary war. Her husband was Dr. John Wright Watson, the first medical doctor in Mt Vernon IL. Someone found this photo in a book, photo copied it and sent me a copier hard copy. I then scanned what they sent me. Frances passed away around 1845 so I presume that the photo was taken in the 1830's. I am sure that it was not a digital photo. Does anyone here know anything about what photographic processess were in use during the 1830's?

Looking again, I believe the image may not be a photograph but a drawing which was probably copied later so it could be shared with her family. If it is a photo, I do not see how it could be of someone who died in 1845. |
