Default Re: S5 price

With the new Canon 40D at $1299., this is going to be a tough row to hoe. The Nikon D300 is actually less. If you're not a wedding photographer, what's the point? When I read they were utilizing the D200 body and buying from Nikon, I knew it would not fly pricewise. Somewhat like calling in "Colonel Sanders" to babysit your chickens?
There are many manufactures of cameras in many countries, to get in bed with your competition is akin to shooting yourself in the foot before you even start.

Default I am here in Arizona right now and...

was taking some shots in the morning of the Grand Canyon (will post pics sometime later. I am SOOOO tired and I am not done with my trip yet).

I can say that I would have seriously considering swapping places with an S5 for these shots. It's not that the e-410 doesn't allow me to do a decent job, but the S5 DR, tonality and typical "Fuji Velvia" simulation of colors is something that I really really wanted today.

The only thing that would stop me in that thought is resolution. The S5 resolution just pales to what I can capture with my "little entry level" e-410. I wonder how well a shot by the S5 would look for something as detail rich as the Grand Canyon, detail wise. It's a sad irony that the S5 would excel at the DR and tones I wanted, but it is also precisely the Grand Canyon something that would make you yearn for more detail since it's such a richly detailed landscape.

But I must say, I would have considered trading the places. When I think about it, prints to 12''x18'' should be completely feasible and some shots where I had a real issue with DR would probably have been handled far better. It's not an automatic walk in the park though because as a photographer you will have to control the S5 to avoid a flat image (too much automatic DR usually yields a flat image). But I find the fuji emulation modes probably capable of helping a lot with that.

Today's experience also made me think about indulging in some post processing for highlights and general curve tweaks.

- Raist

PS: I could only dream Fuji releasing an DR 4/3rds camera. I would love that. But looks like Olympus has a good patent to solve this very issue- the problem in my book is when it is going to show up. The moment that shows up, my desire for an SR sensor dies.
