Looks like a significant improvement in high ISO shots compared to his test Nikon, though I think we should expect improvements in later models as the technology continues to improve. It will be interesting to read more reviews as they come out, for example around the extended dynamic range claims.
I can feel your excitement and anticipation from here . |

For some reason, the Olympus E-1 I would say also exhibits this characteristic, at least in a lot of the jpegs I have seen, either that or something I can't just describe with the color quite right (by that I mean: I can't quite explain away what exactly they are doing that gets the great color- tonality or contrast or both). In the ideal world of course, I rather be able to control that, but I think adjusting the contrast in-camera should provide at least some useful latitude there. The one thing many people I have seen that have the S3 *miss* (or F700 at first, or F710) is that you don't always want that dynamic range for photographs. Sometimes you do indeed want less dynamic range.. you want to blow out the background on purpose while the main subject comes ahead. The S3/S5 do have this control at the photographer's disposal- you can shoot ignoring completely the SR sensor dynamic range advantage or set how much you want. Of course this is mainly for jpeg shooters like my case for the most part- if you shoot raw you do what you want, post-facto. The real issue I see with the S5 at that price bracket is the resolution, but I think that only affects certain markets from what I have seen (landscape/architecture/modeling-fashion). There's tons that can be done with the S5 where it woudl excel. - Raist |

It sounds great and I'm following this with interest. The fact that I have zero Nikon mount lenses, and that I have lots of Oly stuff that gives me lots of satisfaction, means I won't be jumping ship any day now, but I'm very interested in how this sensor works.

well paul i can post up a raw file for you to play with. i use acr and when converting you can slide the exposure meter and still have detail. i expect the s5 to be more refined in all aspects than the s3 is.
