this just in. they used the word fast and the raw data it is fast. writes 22 12mb files in 30 seconds
"- I have been given the go to speak about the S5 and what I know at this point the S5 has extremely low noise all the way to 3200 I compared it to my D200 - noise filters turned off at 1600 I was amazed how good it looks you could use it at 800 for anything IMO I have not printed prints - did not have time yet (tomorrow) compared to the D2x - even better - the D2x is not a low noise camera moire was evident in files (dark hair) with the D2x at 1600, 3200 - and none in the S5 - same lens. light. exp. ISO controls work fast I love the menu color white background with gray with black writing red for crucial format type stuff review of files is fast the wide dyn raw is indeed 25 megs burst in wide raw is 8 files - about 1.8 frames a second take 24 seconds to load all of them to the sandisk extreme iv reg raw 12 meg files the buffer is 19 frames (more than the jpegs??) it will shoot 22 raw 12 meg files in 8 seconds - takes right at 30 seconds to load them all large jpeg fine w/o wide d range - buffer says 16 frames available - but it does 21 frames in 9 seconds to fill the buffer then took 14 seconds to load all of them to a sandisk IV I do not feel speed will be an issue with this camera - review is immediate - raw or jpeg - and movement between images is nearly immediate - plenty fast enough - and I have used a D2X (fast camera) for the last year. face recognition is very cool push it once - it zooms up on a face - close enough to check sharpness push it agin - it goes to another face it finds up to ten faces when the files first views on the LCD after a shot you can delete it then (I like that) it goes to the previous file after you delete I got 446 frames and used 36% of the battery (a friend of mine got 1000 frames on the battery)-so battery life is very good the Nikon grip works fine AWB test I did in tungsten and flourescent the S5 was very good and the D200 was avg. to poor. I used preset (custom) in the studio and outdoors - looks excellent. __________________

I really think Olympus is at the top speeds in the market here, but 8.8 megs is fast indeed and I certainly wouldn't mind that if I had an S5. - Raist |

this is from a user test at imaging expo in tx.
Sorry for the delay. I had the S5 in my hands for about 15 minutes, so I can only make the most general of comments. Viewfinder is a lot better than the S3, although I like the feel of the S3 body better. Maybe it's because I'm used to it, but the S3 fits my hand better. The lens seems to crowd the grip a little on the S5. The i-ttl is of course a great feature, as is the expanded camera control over dynamic range. I did not check the brand of the compact flash media, so I can't say much about the speed or buffer. My S3 has the buffer upgrade, but the S5 seems significantly faster. Face recognition is a great feature and fast. Certain D200 features didn't seem to be there, for example the mirror lock up feature with exposure. You can lock up the mirror but the exposure must be done separately. The D200 will lock up the mirror and after a programmed delay make the exposure in one action. This feature might be hidden somewhere in the menus, but the sales person we dealt with was unaware of it. He also said that the S5 will not take D200 batteries. The fuji staff at the booth were helpful but did not impress me as being overly knowledgeable about the S5. To respond to the other questions: No battery grip, didn't ask. It seemed fast. No sample pix. Didn't try the flash. No external flash was available for testing. |

The D200 and D2-series will release the shutter 30 seconds after the first touch of the shutter release when set to M-up mode. I'd assume Fuji left it as it is. Also, there is a custom function for a delay between raising the mirror and the shutter releasing, and I'd hope Fuji left that too.
