Default 1.4x TC and minimum focusing distance

anyone know if the 1.4x TC changes the minimum focusing distance of the lens it's attached to? has anyone noticed a negative impact on image quality with the converter? apparently you do at least lose some light.

On Canon you lose a stop of light but no change in MFD.

what about auto-focus? do tele-converters make you work your lens with manual focus only?

I can only speak about the Canon TCs. The 1.4x retains autofocus with all bodies I've used. The 2x takes you to f/8 at best. On 1-series bodies, you can still autofocus with the center point at f/8. On D60, 20D, etc., you lose autofocus.

Ok, thanks. Sounds like I might need to see the manual to know for sure about how it would work with my oly e-300 and my lenses. Haven't been able to find any local store that stocks it so I can try it for myself.

Which lens do you want to know the focussing distance with 1.4? I may be able to help. It works well with complete functionality with all the zd lenses I've tried it with,

I have the 14-54 and 50-200 lenses. Am thinking about the 50macro.

I checked with manual focus and measured fairly accurately-
50-200+1.4 focuses to 945mm.
14-54 focusses to 70mm.
I don't have the 50mm.

This is what Olympus has to say on the F stops

* 50-200mm f2.8-3.5 Zuiko Digital Zoom Lens: 70-280mm, f4.0-5.0

* 300mm f2.8 Zuiko digital Telephoto Lens: 420mm, f4.0

* 14-54mm f2.8/3.5 Zuiko Digital Zoom Lens: 19.6 - 75.6mm, f4.0-5.0

* 50mm f2.0 Macro Zuiko Digital Zoom Lens (from f2.: 70mm, f2.8

There is very little if any difference in minimum focusing distance.

Is the lens a good one, you bet it is, it is a great one. I use it all the time with the 50mm and the 50-200 and it works very well.

If you want, look though this gallery, most were taken with the 50-200 + the EC 1.4.

This is one of my favorite shots with the 50-200 + EC 1.4 at full zoom.

These are super shots. The 1.4x is on my list. I've recently grabbed the EX-25 and the 50mm and the 11-22mm and the FL-50. I have this awful feeling I'm going to go through the Olympus range if I'm not careful...
